Protein intake calculator

Enter your weight to calculate the general adult RDA and see the published athlete range for comparison.

General adult RDA

56 g/day

70 kg × 0.8 g/kg

Athlete reference range

84–140 g/day

For comparison: 1.2–2.0 g per kg.

How the protein calculation works.

For generally healthy adults age 19 and older, the protein RDA is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. It is a population reference designed to cover the needs of nearly all healthy adults—not a performance target.

For athletes, NIH ODS summarizes sports-nutrition guidance as 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram per day. The appropriate place inside that range depends on training, energy intake, recovery, and individual circumstances.

The numbers include protein from your entire diet. If a powder supplies 24 grams per serving, that amount is part of—not additional to—your daily total.

This calculator is for adult educational use. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney or liver conditions, recovery from illness or injury, and other clinical circumstances need individualized guidance.

Protein calculator questions

How is the general adult protein amount calculated?
The calculator multiplies body weight in kilograms by the adult Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram per day.
Why is the athlete result a range?
Training type, intensity, total energy intake, and recovery needs vary. NIH ODS summarizes sports-nutrition guidance for athletes as 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram per day rather than one number.
Does this calculate how much protein powder I need?
No. The result refers to total daily protein from food and supplements combined. A protein powder is only one possible source.

Protein per serving is not the whole product.
